Getting hips scored to assess for hip dysplasia is an essential element of any breeding program. If you or someone who you bought your dog from does not do testing for HD, you are missing out on some very important information for your breeding program.
Some people will only test for HD if it has been noticed in their breed. Too late, I say!
In any case, have a look at the chart that I have drawn up below which gives an approximation (ONLY!) of the rating charts used by the UK and Australia compared with the US.
As you can see by the chart, the hip score scheme in Australia-UK gives much more detail than the US OFA scheme. With our scheme, we are not just given more detail on what the hips rate, but which hips rate what. This is one area that the OFA could considerably improve.
It is therefore, recommended, for the more detailed results of your dog's hips, to send your x-rays to the appropriate body in either the UK or Australia.
Dr. Susan Gauthier gave this approximation in a lay publication some years ago:
OFA
Excellent |
BVA
0-4 (no>3hip) |
